Skiing in Bad Kleinkirchheim starts from four main access points. The Kaiserburg rises above the village, where the “Kärnten – Franz Klammer” World Cup downhill course leads via the Strohsack down to the Thermal Römerbad. Long, sweeping slopes are ideal for carving.
On the other side lies the Brunnach in St. Oswald. Here, there is plenty of space for wide turns, with views stretching from the Nockberge mountains all the way to wintry Lake Millstätter See.
The ski area’s 103 kilometres of slopes comprise 11 km of blue, 84 km of red and 8 km of black runs. Sporty skiers can test themselves on the “Radentheiner Streif” or, on selected mornings, follow Franz Klammer down into the valley. Leisure skiers can find their rhythm on the wide slopes of the Brunnach or take the Slow Slope from the Kaiserburgbahn middle station.
FIS Ski World Cup Bad Kleinkirchheim: where Franz Klammer’s story began
His first lift ride, his first victory: Franz Klammer experienced both in Bad Kleinkirchheim. In 1971, aged 18, he won his first European Cup race on the K70 course. Five years later, he became Olympic champion in Innsbruck.
Today, the resort’s World Cup downhill course bears his name: “Kärnten – Franz Klammer”. It is here that the women of the FIS Ski World Cup have battled for hundredths of a second in downhill and Super-G.
In the evening, the rhythm changes: Nock Beats brings music to the mountain huts and the village square.
