Recognised as a natural area worthy of protection since 2012, the 500 km² biosphere reserve offers gentle grass mountains, rare animal species and traditional alpine pasture culture.

Ranger tours, alpine picnics and guided nature experience programmes guarantee authentic insights into a world in harmony with nature.

FAQ about the holiday region

Five bathing lakes with numerous lidos and free lake access, stand-up paddle, e-bike tours, slow trails, long-distance hiking trails, family hikes, summit tours, dinner island and ranger programmes for young and old.

There are five ski areas - with 103 km of pistes, the Bad Kleinkirchheim ski area is the largest in the region, deep snow tours, (multi-day) ski touring trails, ski before 9 & night skiing, torchlight hikes, cross-country skiing on high-altitude trails and tobogganing.

Bad Kleinkirchheim: The St. Kathrein thermal spa with the largest water area in Carinthia and the Römerbad thermal spa with its extensive sauna landscape and Alpine wellness treatments.
Millstätter See: The Millstätter See bathhouse right on the water - Carinthia's first bathhouse with lake access and panoramic saunas. The Drautalperle - a modern adventure and wellness pool with sports pool, sauna area and children's area in Spittal an der Drau.
Exclusive day spas: Numerous hotels between lake and mountain also open their day spa areas to external guests - from infinity pools and stone pine saunas to regionally inspired treatments.

All year round: March-November for lake, hiking, biking & wellness, November-April for winter sports & wellness.

Children's ski passes from € 1/day, free children's ski courses, family hikes, adventure farms and exciting ranger programmes in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. With the Millstätter See Inclusive Card, Bad Kleinkirchheim Sonnenschein Card & Kärnten Card, family holidays between lake and mountain are particularly affordable.

By Train & Shuttle

Regional and long-distance trains conveniently connect the home station with the railway stations of Spittal-Millstätter See or Villach. Thanks to the new Koralmbahn railway line, the journey between Graz and Spittal takes around 1 hour and 32 minutes by train. Trains to Salzburg run hourly.
In Carinthia, the S-Bahn, for example on the S1 line, runs every half hour between Villach - Klagenfurt - & Spittal-Millstätter See

Tip: Guests can use the Carinthia train station shuttle for the last few kilometres to their accommodation at a reasonable price (e.g. only around €3 per journey with the Millstätter See Inclusive Card or Sonnenschein Card)

By car

Via the A10 motorway: Spittal/Millstätter See exit - directly into the Nockberge mountains.

By airplane

The nearest airports are Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Ljubljana - continue your journey comfortably by train or shuttle.
