The Nockberge Trail covers 128 kilometres in eight stages from Katschberg to Seeboden am Millstätter See – right across the UNESCO Carinthian Nockberge Biosphere Park. Gentle peaks, wide alpine pastures and extensive Swiss stone pine forests characterise this special long-distance hiking trail in Carinthia.

Accommodation on the Nockberge Trail – huts, hotels & thermal spas

Daily stages lasting between three and seven hours lead through the UNESCO Biosphere Park. Along the Nockberge Trail, there are mountain huts, inns and comfortable hotels – from Turracher Höhe via Falkert to Bad Kleinkirchheim and Seeboden on Lake Millstatt.

Rest days in Bad Kleinkirchheim are particularly popular: the Römerbad thermal spa and the St. Kathrein thermal spa offer regeneration after demanding stages. On the Turracher Höhe or at Lake Millstatt, long-distance hiking, culinary delights and restful nights are also combined – added value that classic high alpine trails do not offer.

Soothing nature on the Nockberge Trail – Speik & Swiss stone pine

Two alpine plants characterise the landscape along the Nockberge Trail: the genuine Speik and the Swiss stone pine. The strictly protected Speik only thrives at higher altitudes in the Nockberge Mountains and is traditionally processed into natural care products.

The Swiss stone pine forests of the region provide cones for regional specialities with a calming effect. A shot of Swiss stone pine liqueur in a mountain hut is just as much a part of the experience here as a rest under centuries-old trees.

In winter, the trail becomes a multi-day ski crossing from Katschberg to Bad Kleinkirchheim – with comfortable lodges and bookable services.

The Nockberge Trail is 128 kilometres long. It leads in eight stages from Katschberg to Seeboden am Millstätter See through the UNESCO Carinthian Nockberge Biosphere Park.

The long-distance hiking trail is divided into eight daily stages. Depending on your fitness level or time budget, additional rest or wellness days – for example in Bad Kleinkirchheim – can be planned.

The trail is considered moderately difficult to challenging. Some stages are longer and require stamina, sure-footedness and alpine experience. There are no technically difficult climbing passages, but good preparation is still important.

The ideal time for hiking is between early June and early October. During this period, the trails are usually free of snow and the accommodation along the route is open.

The Nockberge Trail is well signposted and follows existing alpine trail markings. However, an up-to-date hiking map or GPS track is still recommended.

Yes. Bookable offers including luggage transport can be organised via the official Nockberge Trail Information and Booking Centre.

Yes. Individual stages can be completed separately or combined with rest days. Individual starting points are also possible.

There are mountain huts, inns and hiking hotels along the route. The exact opening hours should be checked in advance.
