Around Lake Millstatt, Bad Kleinkirchheim and the Nockberge Mountains lies a hiking region that exudes tranquillity, vastness and scenic diversity 365 days a year. Gentle mountains, open alpine pastures and bathing lakes at the foothills of the peaks characterise the landscape and make hiking in Carinthia a conscious experience of nature in the UNESCO Carinthian Nockberge Biosphere Park.
You can get started in a relaxed manner with one of the four mountain railways, panoramic trails open up wide views of the lake and mountains, and alpine stages can be combined with regeneration in the thermal springs of the Bad Kleinkirchheim high valley. Hiking here is defined by TIME – TIME for exercise, views and arriving in the moment.
Every moment in the Nockberge Mountains tells its own story – sometimes quiet, sometimes filled with wonder, always authentic. Whether sunrise or starry night, alpine delights or summit bliss: these are the special experiences that define hiking in Carinthia. Discover now – and book online now.
Where does our next step with TIME take us?
Alpine pastures are cultivated areas where cows, horses and other animals roam freely during the summer months. Their grazing keeps Austria's unique alpine and cultural landscape open and accessible.
Careful behavior is crucial for hikers - especially when hiking with dogs: dogs should always be kept on a lead and stay close to their owners when encountering grazing animals. However, if a direct confrontation is imminent, it can be safer to briefly take the dog off the lead so that it can get out of the way.
The 10 most important rules of conduct when encountering grazing animals:
1. Avoid contact with grazing livestock, do not feed animals, keep a safe distance!
2. Behave calmly, do not frighten grazing animals!
3. Mother cows protect their calves, avoid encounters between mother cows and dogs!
4. Always keep dogs under control and on a short lead. If an attack by a grazing animal is foreseeable: Unleash immediately!
5. Do not leave marked hiking and cycling trails!
6. If grazing animals are blocking the path, avoid or cycle around them as far as possible, if necessary push your bike!
7. If grazing cattle are approaching: stay calm, do not turn your back, avoid the animals!
8. Leave the grazing area quickly at the first sign of restless animals!
9. Fences must be observed! If there is a gate, use it, then close it again and cross the pasture quickly!
10. Treat the people working here, nature and the animals with respect!
